How Tip Calculator Works?

Calculate the tip amount, total bill with tip, and split the cost among multiple people easily.

1

Enter the total bill amount from your restaurant, salon, or service provider.

2

Set the tip percentage you want to give — 5-10% is common in India, 15-20% is standard in the US.

3

Enter the number of people splitting the bill (set to 1 if not splitting).

4

The calculator computes the tip amount by applying the percentage to the bill, then adds it to get the total with tip.

5

If splitting, the total and tip are divided equally among all people to show each person's share.

Formula Used

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100); Total with Tip = Bill Amount + Tip Amount; Per Person = Total with Tip ÷ Number of People

Check if a service charge is already included in your bill before adding a tip. In India, service charge is voluntary and you can legally decline it.

Important — Read Before You Decide

  • Many Indian restaurants already add 5–10% service charge to the bill — check before tipping extra
  • Service charge is NOT the same as a tip — service charge goes to the restaurant, tips go to staff
  • You are legally allowed to refuse paying service charge in India (it's voluntary per CCPA guidelines)
  • Tipping culture varies globally — 15–20% is standard in the US, while 5–10% is common in India
  • Delivery app tips often don't fully reach the delivery partner — consider cash tips
  • Fine dining restaurants may expect 10–15% tips on top of service charge

What Happens If You Ignore These?

  • Not tipping at all in tip-dependent cultures (like the US) is considered rude
  • Double-tipping by adding tip on top of service charge means overpaying
  • Splitting bills unevenly without communication can cause awkwardness among friends
  • Tipping on the pre-tax amount vs total amount creates different results

Smart Tips

  • In India, tip 5–10% if no service charge is included, or round up the bill
  • For US travel, always tip 15–20% at restaurants — it's part of server wages
  • Use the 10% shortcut: find 10% of the bill and adjust up or down from there
  • When splitting, agree on equal split vs itemised split before ordering
  • Tip delivery drivers ₹20–50 for food delivery — they earn very low base pay
