Today, October 15, 2026, the RBI officially announced the nationwide launch of its digital currency, the Digital Rupee (e₹). This initiative comes as part of India's ongoing efforts to modernize its financial system and promote a cashless economy. The pilot project began in late 2025 and has shown promising results, with over 1 million users participating in initial trials, processing transactions worth ₹500 crores within the first month.
The introduction of the e₹ aims to enhance transaction efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the overall payment ecosystem. As the digital currency rolls out, it will be integrated into existing UPI systems, allowing seamless transactions for everyday purchases. The RBI's digital currency will also support blockchain technology, ensuring secure and transparent transactions.
