CTC vs In-Hand Salary: The Difference
CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount your employer spends on you annually. It includes basic salary, HRA, special allowances, employer EPF, gratuity, insurance, and sometimes meal coupons and cab allowances.
In-hand salary is what lands in your bank account. The gap is often 25–35%, because of:
- Employee EPF: 12% of basic salary deducted from pay
- Income tax (TDS): Deducted based on your tax regime and investments
- Professional tax: ₹200/month in most states
- Employer contributions: EPF and gratuity are CTC cost but not paid to you monthly

How to Negotiate Better In-Hand Salary
- Ask for higher special allowance: It goes directly to your in-hand, unlike EPF or gratuity.
- Opt for lower basic if allowed: Lower basic means lower EPF deduction, giving you more in-hand now. Trade-off: lower retirement savings.
- Request flexible benefits: Fuel reimbursement, meal coupons, or telephone allowance can be tax-exempt.
- Negotiate reimbursements: Internet, books, professional development allowances are often tax-free if backed by bills.
- Choose tax regime wisely: Inform employer about your chosen regime early for accurate TDS deduction.
