What Is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a grading system used by most Indian universities and boards. Instead of raw marks, students receive grade points (typically on a 10-point scale) for each subject.

The problem arises when you need to convert CGPA to percentage — for job applications, competitive exam forms, or higher studies abroad. There is no single universal formula — each university has its own conversion method.

University-wise Conversion Formulas

Each university uses a different formula:

When Does Conversion Matter?

Several situations require converting CGPA to percentage:

  • Job applications: Many companies ask for percentage, not CGPA. Some set minimums like 60% or 70%.
  • Government exams: UPSC, SSC, banking exams require percentage-based eligibility.
  • Higher studies abroad: US universities use 4-point GPA. You may need CGPA to percentage to GPA conversion.
  • WES evaluation: Required for Canada/Australia immigration. Needs percentage or official conversion letter.
  • Competitive exams: CAT, GATE, GRE sometimes ask for aggregate percentage.

Tips for Students

  • Always keep marksheets handy: Some organizations want marksheet verification.
  • Check your university's official formula: Don't assume the CBSE formula applies everywhere.
  • For WES or foreign evaluation: Get an official conversion letter from your university registrar.
  • GPA conversion for US: Common approximation is CGPA ÷ (max CGPA) × 4.
  • Keep digital copies: Store scans of marksheets and degree certificates in cloud storage.
